A Set of Four Vintage Biscia Chairs by Pascal Mourgue for Steiner, 1970's
£850.00
This is a fabulous set of vintage original dining chairs from the 1970's. The Biscia model from Steiner was designed by Pascal Morgue in 1969. The design is a cantelever style with echoes of the Bauhaus era. In tubular chromed steel with a faux leather bucket style seat supported by sprung chords the design is sleek and functional.
Each chair is 74cm tall x 46cm wide x 51cm deep. The seat height is 48cm.
Pascal Mourgue (1943-2014) considered himself to be an artist who was also a designer. He graduated from the French Boulle school (sculpture) and Ensad (Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs). He began designing furniture in 1962, while continuing to be a prolific artist. Never openly seeking publicity, Pascal Mourgue always prized artistic integrity above commercial achievement. This love of art also led him to work in fields as diverse as designing sailing boats for Cartier, crystal objects for Baccarat, architecture, painting and sculpture.
The chairs wear their history with a charming patina. They are in good structural condition with the steel showing no cracks or breaks. The faux leather of the seats is also solid with no cuts, rips or tears. The chrome on the frames has some rust spots and some areas of rust hazing. The edging of the seat pad cut-out sections shows signs of wear, with some of the edging missing. Please see example photographs. One chair has one of its sprung chords missing, which does not effect function or comfort. All four chairs have had new feet added to the steel frame in the style of the originals (what remains of the original feet will be provided with the chairs).
The table shown in one photograph is not included, but is for sale via a separate listing.
